5 Point Perspective : Curvilinear Perspective

5 Point Perspective : Curvilinear Perspective

This is a complex but dynamic system for rendering certain 3-dimensional situations in a 2-dimensional medium! This system maps an image into a circle with 4 VPs at the cardinal headings N,W,S,E and one at the circle origin.

    Advanced Perspective : Curvilinear

Check out this video to learn how to use curvilinear perspective. This shows the idea of how to create a curvilinear perspective image. Normally this view would only be used when drawing something incredibly massive. It's a bit like looking through a fish-eye lens. This is considered an advanced technique because you should already have a good grasp of 1, 2

Creating a Spiral Staircase with Multiple Perspective Points

Creating a Spiral Staircase with Multiple Perspective Points

Joe Sparano, a student from Omaha, asked about creating a spiral staircase using linear perspective. This process requires multiple vanishing points and the subdivision of a square. Generally speaking, we are constructing this in a cylinder, although my diagram uses an octagon. You will get the best understanding of the following explanation if you have read through the Chalkboard's pages on perspective drawing.

    Curvilinear Perspective

    Curvilinear Perspective

Curvilinear perspective allows much greater field of vision than traditional rectilinear perspective. In the image below, we are able to see boxes from all 6 directions, and draw them well beyond the vanishing points, while allowing them to still look like boxes. In rectilinear 3-point perspective, the boxes beyond the vanishing points distort severely.

    Fish-eye and Curvilinear Perspective

    Fish-eye and Curvilinear Perspective

Fish-eye lenses are used in photography to capture angles larger than the normal field of view of cameras. This means that the lens captures more of a scene than a standard lens, at the expense of some distortion. Examples where this can be useful are security cameras and "peep-holes" outwards on doors.

Taking it Even Farther: Multiple Point Perspective!

So far, we have looked at one, two, and three point perspectives. Multiple point perspective takes those perspectives and expands on them. Most artists don’t deal a lot with multiple vanishing points as there are very little opportunities to use them.
