Drawing the face and head can be done without perspective techniques, however, it comes in handy when drawing it in relation to other objects or people. It also is very effective in helping the artist draw the human face and head when it is on a slant or tilt. This is when drawing faces becomes difficult. Use the following perspective techniques to help you through your facial drawing difficulties. This is an excerpt from Drawing the Head and Hands by Andrew Loomis.

How to Draw the Face and Head in Perspective to Keep Correct Proportions When Slanting or Tilting Head
We can draw the head out in planes, such as seen in these pictures. Planes help us keep the proper relationship and size through the entire face and head within the construction lines. The face then becomes simpler to draw in all types of slanted directions and positions. The slant of the cheeks and the rounded rectangle of the forehead fall into place within the 3 divisions of the head. By drawing the head and face in this block method, we figure out the angles though the entire face. This is our 1st step towards drawing the face and head in correct perspective.

The drawing of the face in correct perspective can show the difference in the amateur and professional artists. Every object draw must have a horizon line and an eye level. On the left, above, we see the planes of the face and head as seen from above or below the eye level. If a face were as huge as a skyscraper it would also be affected by perspective laws in the exact same way that the skyscraper would be affected. Keep this in mind as you draw faces and heads. This can help you understand how large or small to make figures in comparison to other “things” or “people” in a drawing. This wonderful tutorial comes from an old book by Andrew Loomis….check out his book on Amazon…How to Draw Head and Hands.
