Drawing mouths and lips. Believe it or not, this is what people question me the most about. So I figured it was time to get a mouths / lips drawing tutorial out to you. I couldn’t find any online tutorials / lessons about how to draw proportional mouths and lips in a detailed structural way…so I decided to show you step by step how to draw the mouth in this way. This way, if you aren’t quite sure how to do mouths…at least you will have some guidelines in your head to use in the future. I will do this with the mouth from different viewpoints in future tutorials as well. Good luck.
Drawing Mouths & Lips – How to Draw Mouths Step by Step Tutorial
Step 1
To start drawing the mouth, first draw a horizontal line (as seen above).
Step 2
Then find the center of your horizontal line and draw a vertical line (as seen in the picture above).
Step 3
Now, see the picture above and try to draw the same angles that I have drawn. Try to make sure that the right and left sides are equal, or the mouth will appear to be twisted.
Step 4
Now draw the same angle that you drew in step #3, on the top of the mouth as well. The dotted lines show that the angles of the upper lip must correspond with those of the mouth. It looks like we drew a cube, doesn’t it?
Now draw a line down from the each side of the bottom ‘v’ like shape that we drew in step #3 to the horizontal line.
To help you figure out where to draw the line to…I have illustrated to you that it is about 3 times the size of 1/2 the cube. Remember that everybody has different sized mouths / lips so it all depends on the person that you are drawing.
Step 6
Now draw a line down from the each side of the top ‘v’ like shape that we drew in step #3 to slightly above the lines that we drew in step #5.
Step 7
Now draw another horizontal line below the first horizontal line.
To help you figure out where to draw the bottom horizontal line, I illustrated for you above that the space between the 2 horizontal lines (aka – the bottom lip) is larger than the space as from the middle horizontal line to the top of the lips. What I am trying to say is that the bottom lip is broader (thicker) than the top lip. Again, remember that everybody has different sized lips.
Step 8
Now draw a line from each side of the bottom horizontal line to slightly below the horizontal line. Draw this line as if you were trying to match it with the upper lip line (the one coming down at an angle, not the horizontal line).
Step 9
Now draw an outwards slanted line at the end of each lip (as seen above). The angle should be the same as the angle you formed in step #3.
Step 10
Now just cross the ‘T’ to make a smiley / grin-like line to the mouth.
Step 11
So your drawn mouth should look something like this now.
Step 12
Now just curve all the lines to make a more natural lip shape and you’ve got a mouth. I didn’t put details in the lip, but in a future tutorial, I will teach you how to draw details in a person’s mouth / lips.
