Today I will show you how to draw Totoro, Small Totoro, and Medium Totoro from My Neighbor Totoro. These are adorable characters and even though I have never seen the movie or read the books (that I remember), I was drawn to these characters. I based this picture on a Totoro bag that I found on Amazon. I thought you would enjoy learning how to draw them as well. I have broken down this simple tutorial into easy step by step illustrated instructions. Enjoy and Happy Drawing!

Written-Out Step by Step Drawing Instructions
All guide-lines in this tutorial will be blue – that means they are just their to guide you, and later they will be erased.
(Step 1) Draw 2 sideways ?-like shaped curves for the branch. Then lightly draw a rounded rectangle guide-line for Totoro’s body. Then draw a letter ‘U’ shape for Medium Totoro’s body.
(Step 2) Draw as sideways letter ‘C’ shape for Totoro’s head. Draw the head for Medium Totoro as well.
(Step 3) Draw 3 ovals…2 for eyes and one for Small Totoro’s body. Draw a sideways letter ‘U’ shape for Medium Totoro’s tail. Draw a sideways ? shapes for branches.
(Step 4) Draw a letter ‘C’ shape for Medium Totoro’s arm. Draw a backwards #3-like shape for part of the front branch. Draw circles in Totoro’s eyes. Draw curved lines for Small Totoro’s head.
(Step 5) Draw upside down letter ‘V’ shapes on Small Totoro’s head. Draw another sideways ? shape and a line on the tree branch. Draw part of a circle on Medium Totoro’s body.
(Step 6) Draw zig-zaggy shapes on Large Totoro’s head. Draw a sideways letter ‘S’ shape for Totoro’s nose. Draw zig-zaggy lines for his fur. Draw circles for Medium Totoro’s eyes.
(Step 7) Draw lines for fishing pole. Draw more zig-zaggy shapes for Totoro’s fur. Draw another sideways ?-like shape on tree branch. Draw another letter ‘U’ shape for Medium Totoro’s arm.
(Step 8) Draw upside down letter ‘U’ shapes for Totoro’s ears (Just make them a little mis-shapen. Draw circles for Small Totoro’s eyes. Draw a line on his head. Draw a curved line for nostrils. Draw a circle in each eye.
(Step 9) Draw ovals for Totoro’s feet. Draw a curved letter ‘v’ shape ont he branch. Draw a sideways letter ‘c’ shape on top of nose. Draw a circle for the flower middle. Draw curved lines for arm guidelines and stomach on Totoro.
(Step 10) Use Totoro’s guidelines to help you figure out where to draw zig-zaggy fur. Draw ovals on Medium Totoro for eyes and nose.
(Step 11) Draw long ovals for Totoro’s whiskers. Draw letter ‘V’ shapes for Totoro’s feet nails. Draw curved lines for his hand claws. Draw a #2 and #5 on top of Medium Totoro’s head. Draw a #3 shape for flower’s petals. Draw a line on the fishing pole.
(Step 12) Draw two more #3 shapes on flower for petals. Draw curved lines that look like boomerangs on Totoro’s stomach. Draw a line on each of Totoro’s hand nails. Draw a letter ‘U’ shape on each of his toe’s nails.
(Step 13) Draw curved lines on two of their bellies. Draw curved line and letter ‘L’ line on Medium Totoro’s ears. Draw ovals on Totoro’s feet.
(Step 14) Draw leaf shapes for leaves. Draw a letter ‘U’ shape to finish flower’s petals.
(Step 15) Draw stems. Draw lines on Totoro’s face. Draw curved lines on Medium Totoro’s belly.
(Step 16) Draw sideways letter ‘U’ shapes to connect lines on their bellies. Draw a letter ‘U’ shape for Totoro’s tail and for flower’s petal. Draw stems.
