The human body is a work of art in itself and it seems impossible to draw it. However, there are proportions of the body that you should memorize and always keep in the back of your mind…and once you do this, the human body isn’t so hard to draw at all. It is just these facts that should pull all everything together for you. Bookmark this page and come back to it for when you need it.

After you memorize the proportions of the human figure and know the relationships between different body parts, practice sketching it out, over and over again. Then go ahead and draw the human figure in different poses….making sure that you keep the same relationships between the body parts.
I will break these different age groups down into separate sections below
This guy is about 7 and 1/2 heads tall. A full-sized adult is 8 heads tall.
(1) Draw a line like you did with the adult.
(2) Draw a half line notch in the center…and then 1/4 lines as well. Draw his head.
(3) Draw the torso line and an arrow head representing the crotch line.
(4) Draw the shoulders 2.5 heads wide…making sure to draw it down far enough to leave room for a neck.
(5) Draw the elbows a bit above the 3rd line down…and draw the wrists a bit below the crotch line.
(6) Draw the hands about the size of the face…and draw the arms in. Draw the hips about 2 heads wide.
(7) Draw Knees at the half way point between crotch and feet.
(8) Draw feet and legs in.

(2) Draw 1/4 lines. Draw notch line between the half and the 1/4 mark (above the half). Draw the shoulders 2.5 heads wide…making sure to draw it down far enough to leave room for a neck.
(3) Draw the elbow dots a bit above the 3rd line down…and draw the wrist dots a bit below the crotch line.
(4) Draw the hands about the size of the face…and draw the arms in. Draw the hips about 2 heads wide.

(7) Draw Knees at the half way point between crotch and feet.
(8) Draw feet and legs in.
This little guy is about 6 heads tall. A full-sized adult is 8 heads tall.
(1) Draw a line like you did with the adult. Draw a half line notch in the center. Draw a head.
(2) Draw a half way notch. This is where we would normally draw the crotch area, however, children have shorter-proportional legs. So please draw the half way mark down lower…as I did.
(3) So now, since proportions are off, please use the child’s head height as the measurement of how far down (from the shoulders) to draw the elbow.
(4) Then draw the wrists slightly below the crotch line, like we always do.
(5) Draw the arms in and draw the hands the size of the kid’s face.
(6) Draw waist in as 2 heads wide.
(7) Draw the knees at the 1/4 mark.
(8) And as always, the feet are at the bottom line.

(2) Draw a half way notch. This is where we would normally draw the crotch area, however, children have shorter-proportional legs. So please draw the half way mark down lower…as I did.
(3) Now draw the shoulders a bit down from the head, making the shoulders only 2 heads wide.

(2) Draw a half way notch. This is where we would normally draw the crotch area, however, children have shorter-proportional legs. So please draw the half way mark down lower…as I did.
(3) Now draw the shoulders just below the head because baby’s have very little neck. They aren’t very wide at all, as you can see.

As you know, there is no school right now. I am an elementary art teacher trying to help students with their art online.
Would it be okay to copy and paste a few of your pages (with your site name) into a slide show for my students?
I cannot let the site link directly to the internet due to system restrictions regarding online student safety, but they will have the online address if they want to go there with an adult's permission.
This site is VERY helpful and fits perfectly into what I am trying to teach them.
Thank you so much. Yes, you have my permission. Thanks for asking first.
you are the inspiration for us.

thanks for this post. i'm an architecture student.that was really useful for me??
Thank you. I am a self taught artist always trying to improve plus trying to get my grandchildren started out properly.
Information here is useful, easy to grasp. I had forgotten about head measurements in proportionality that they taught me in art classes, years ago. This is wonderful stuff. Thanks.
