Adding Shadows to the Letters – Where to Place Shadows

Okay, so in the picture above, I gave you 3 different examples of how to shadow the letters. Whatever you do, keep it consistent. If all the darker shadows are on the sides of the letter on one letter, make sure all the letters have the darker shadows on the sides. If all the shadows are on the bottom of one letter, make sure all letters exhibit this. Either way, the letter looks 3 dimensional if the shading is consistent.

For the top row, the lighting would be coming from above and from the right.

For the second row, the lighting would be coming from behind the letter.

For the third row, the lighting would be coming from the top and from the right….just like the top row, however, the light is slightly higher and further to the right.

Shading Right Behind the Letters – Be Consistent

With these letters, add a shadow to the left and below every edge. This will make a realistic 3-dimensional look.

Another Way to Add Drop Shadows

Add a shadow the the right of every letter in this example.

Or Putting a shadow behind the letters

This is a lot more complicated than the previous two examples. As you can see by the ‘F’ example above. You have to rotate the shadow letter down and at an angle towards the right. The first shadow in the examples is if the letter was at an angle and so the shadow is at a slighter angle then the second letter in each example. The second example for each letter is a letter on a table or flat surface. Use each example given to help you draw these shadows. Once you draw these shadows then try it out on your own 3-dimensional letters. Please let me know if you need a complete tutorial on this shading example.
