How to Draw Manga / Anime Heads & Faces in 3/4 Three Quarters View

Making a 3/4 (three quarters view) view of the head is just a matter of re-aligning the center point. You should be thinking 3 dimensionally when working on this since it is not flat like of a front view. Here is the Tutorial on Drawing Anime / Manga Heads from the Front View.

Step 1

To begin, start with a circle. (Fig 1.)

Step 2

Divide the circle into 2 parts vertically. (Fig. 2) The center line of the division must be placed slightly on the left and not on the middle of the circle. This center line is where the nose and mouth will be aligned.

This head will be slightly facing towards the left.

Step 3

Since the head is slightly facing to the left, the ear and cheek of the other side of the face will be visible. See fig 1.

Step 4

Fig. 2. Mark the area for the nose and mouth according to the alignment of the center line.

Step 5

Place the nose and the mouth in the center line and add some details needed. Always stick to the guidelines of the 3/4 view and place the parts such as the eyes to its proper place, or else the head will be out of proportion and distorted (review the head construction tutorials)

Step 6

Draw in some more details as seen above.

Just another Note of Interest to Remember

Observe how the dummy head faces the front and slightly turning. Notice how the left part of the face became visible. This is what you have to consider when drawing 3/4 view of the head.

  • Could use a bit of critiquing...You'll want to make sure your line quality isn't so rough. Also, the hair is just...jagged ends. Actually, you drew her like a boy. Without the hair, every characteristic, thick brows, minimal eyelashes, think nose, just screams 'I'M A BOY!' And there's no need to be so heavy-handed on the nose shading. That shadow wouldn't go that far. If you tried drawing this like a boy, with normal eyes, you'd end up with something pretty darn close to Aang from Avatar: The last Airbender. Additionally, the eye farthest from tour view would be thinner than the one closest to you.
Overall, while this is good if you want to get a face shape, I'd suggest that you'd look somewhere else on learning to differentiate boys from girls, and how to draw hair.

    • Thanks for the critique. The person who made this tutorial isn't here any more, otherwise I would share your critique with him. Thanks.

    • Well... everybody has their own style of drawing eyes. It is sort of how you recognize the author. I suggest you search anime eyes copy other's eyes until you think your ready to craft your own!
