Guide to Drawing Cute Kawaii Characters : Part 1 : How to Draw Kawaii People, Expressions, Faces, Body Poses
Keep Things Simple and Out of Proportion in Kawaii Style
Kawaii is the simplest style to draw your characters in…it is a great place to start if you are learning how to draw. You don’t need to put a lot of detail into your characters’ features, such as hands, feet, clothing, and facial features. The outline of a Kawaii character should be recognizable by the outline. In the picture above, you can see that the character is a girl who is standing on one foot and stretching out her arms.
Notice that the head is huge and that the body is stout and chubby-ish. The body is very small in proportion to the head.
Kawaii Faces Usually Come in 3 Different Shapes
[ad#draw]
The Kawaii style head comes in three different shapes…although you can change your own characters. Usually kawaii people have faces that are either half-oval shaped, letter ‘S’ shaped, or a flat-bottomed ‘U’ shaped. The facial features are always very simple, as you can see. The eyes are always huge in proportion to the face, and usually has oval cheeks right below them.
Notice that you don’t draw neatly combed hair with Kawaii style. You make it jagged and messy.
Guide to Drawing Kawaii Facial Emotions and Expressions
Kawaii expressions are very easy to draw, which is one of the things that makes kawaii style such a great place for new drawers to start learning how to draw. Bookmark this page to come back to this guide often.
A Reference to Kawaii Bodies / Kawaii Body Poses
Here are some good Kawaii poses that are good to keep as reference...remember to bookmark this page to come back to often. Unlike other styles of drawing…the feet and hands have almost not detail at all…this makes it very easy to draw Kawaii poses. Don’t think too hard about it…just try and I bet you can do it.
What Colors Are Used in Kawaii Style? Here is  a Kawaii Style Color Palette
Usually people use this color palette when they are coloring in their Kawaii characters and their clothing, etc. The colors are muted and vague like with pastels. Easter colors are usually a good bet.
However, I see people using brighter colors, on occasion, with Kawaii characters…mostly with food and other cutesy characters.
Use Flat Colors without Gradients
Just use flat colors, without shading, when you are coloring in your Kawaii characters. There is no need to shade in something that you are trying to keep simple. And it looks nicer this way I think.
We will do part II shortly where we will talk more about drawing Kawaii animals, other Kawaii style, tips, and more reference sheets.
