There are a huge variety of human emotions and facial expressions that you, as an aspiring artist, cartoonist, or comic artist needs to figure out how to draw. So, instead of going into the detail of a human’s face when studying facial expressions, here is an easy way to just learn about the way to draw expressions with simple straight lines. By drawing with the simple straight line it will be seen that it is possible to express almost every human emotion. Below you will see 8 examples of straight-line expressions as well as the corresponding drawing of an illustrated face that you can study and try to draw. After you feel comfortable drawing the following faces, I suggest that you go on to study your own face in the mirror. How do you look when you are angry? How do you look when you are surprised? How do you look when you are annoyed? And so on. It will be found most excellent practice to create expressions of your own by such departures from the examples here given as your own mind suggests, as, for instance, by closing one eye and opening the other—making one side of the face in tears and the other smiling. Do not hesitate to make any radical changes from the rules given to you, for it is only by so doing that you can possibly become self-reliant and creative. Don’t be a simple copyist—let your own wings of creativity soar.

Notice below that we are just asking you to draw each face as a diamond. Notice that you can draw all the face features with straight lines. For example, you can draw the nose as a letter ‘M’.
Notice what happens to the face when you are sad or mad. The mouth is turned in an upside down letter ‘v’ shape. And the eyebrows do the opposite, they form a letter ‘v’ shape and do the same with his eyes.
Notice as he gets more upset, the facial features get deeper.
I guess this is what they mean by a long face.
When the man is crying, it turns into more of a letter ‘M’ like shape and the upper lip disappears and the eyes close.
Notice what happens to the face when you are shappy. The mouth is turned in an upwards curve shape.
